Natural and cultural resources
The town of Pembroke Dock has suffered from a lack of employment and deprivation for many years. However, the town has a unique and fascinating history and there is untapped potential to develop new projects and initiatives centred on its unique heritage and riverside location.
This feasibility study seeks to explore the potential for tourism in Pembroke Dock and to investigate and assess tourism initiatives and assets, which could support existing jobs within the tourism sector, as well as create new jobs within existing organisations as well as new initiatives.
The feasibility study explored, identified and assessed opportunities and projects for the development of tourism offer, with a potential to contribute to Pembroke Dock’s regeneration and increased visitor numbers to the area.
The project explored and recommended a ‘whole community’ approach to tourism – i.e. attractions and organisations working together to sell an experience as a whole. Encouraging people to explore and find out about things they might not know about. Tying it all together with tours and experiences.
The pandemic has significantly affected the Town Team’s volunteer availability. When individual volunteers start to recover and are able to contribute again, the feasibility study recommendations will be revisited and the project team will work to help make them happen.
“A sound basis upon which all organisations in the Town can plan to move forward in the future and enhance the Tourist experience. From our organisations point of view, we will certainly be using the information and recommendations contained in the report to update our business plan in the near future.”
Not to be so reliant on one individual to push the project forward. Could have perhaps recruited a Town Champion / paid position before starting the project, who could have helped to fill the gaps when volunteer availability suffered. A resourcing Plan B would have helped the primary volunteer, who was struggling to remain involved.
