Wellbeing of Future Generations in Dinas Cross

A project to take an innovative approach to putting key pieces of legislation into practice has been funded by Arwain Sir Benfro.

Arwain Sir Benfro – the Local Action Group (LAG) for Pembrokeshire, administered by PLANED has provided funding of £9,840 to Dinas Community Council for a pilot project in a small community, using innovative approaches to explore the Wellbeing of Future Generations Act (2017) and the Social Services and Wellbeing Act (2014).

This is funded through the LEADER programme, which is part of the Welsh Government Rural Communities – Rural Development Programme 2014 – 2020, Funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government.

The Well-being of Future Generations Act requires a different approach to working.  It provides a shared vision for public services in Wales for the future. Community Councils are expected to consider how they can increasingly work with other partners and local citizens to contribute to the well-being of their area.

For some community councils this method of working will be very different and could be quite challenging, this project could support Dinas Community Council during this transition time to identify their requirements to meet the needs of the WFG Act.

This project aims to:

  1. Identify other town and community councils that already are working more ‘co-productively’ to identify best practice and consider how some ideas may work in practice in Dinas.
  2. Research and explore the specific needs of the community and work with current service providers, community organisations and volunteers to identify the services required in the village, and explore how the community council can work more effectively and ‘co-productively’ with the local community to sustain and improve local services.
  3. Initiate training and provide training for the community councillors in understanding the new statutory requirements and the change in their roles and responsibilities.
  4. This project could work with the Welsh Government to ‘trial’ and coproduce the toolkit at ground level.  Facilitating and creating new clusters of smaller community councils the project will be identifying other town and community councils that Dinas could work more collaboratively with.

Arwain Sir Benfro is currently supporting project ideas from local community groups, organisations and businesses. As the Local Action Group for Pembrokeshire, we bring together a mix of local community representatives, business, third sector, local authority partners.

LEADER is supporting all kinds of activity: mentoring, training, feasibility studies or pilot projects that test an innovative new idea. It can also be used for projects that improve local skills, make better use of a local resource or realise the economic potential of part of the locality leading to a ‘new’ outcome or product.
