Women of West Wales

Natural and cultural resources

Project Description:

The project will research and start to collate the diverse histories of local women in new and innovative ways including a searchable database/website/app or virtual museum. The main aims of the project are to redress the balance in recorded history, ensuring that women are fairly & accurately represented. We also wish to enhance the sustainability of the museum, provide volunteer & employment opportunities, develop new skills among staff and volunteers, provide meaningful, accessible information for all, create a more comprehensive legacy & something that can be consistently developed in the future.

Project Outcomes:

The WOWW online museum has (and continues to) provide a free and easily accessible resource that preserves and shares local women’s history that would otherwise be lost. This will be further extended and developed over the next two years.

The project has exceeded expectation for collaboration and the sharing of resources and promotional opportunities.  The scope of activities and events has far exceeded expectations and has reached out to people from all areas of the community.

The project has confirmed funding for the next two years from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This will expand the geographical reach and research of the WOWW online museum. Furthermore, time will be spent on developing further relationships with other groups and individuals to spread the word and create innovative workshops, talks and events for the benefit of the community.

Really enjoyed meeting new poets and sharing the stories of Welsh women with them. The day was not long enough.”

“This project is drawing people into the museum, increasing footfall and developing knowledge of and pride in the rich heritage of West Wales.”

Lessons Learned:

The project has been wide reaching and required facilitation, participation and administration that required many extra hours for just one part-time member of staff. While volunteer participation has been invaluable, the project really required at least one more member of staff or a full-time post.
